Five Inventions That Changed the World

By: J.Morgan

There is no question that inventions have changed the world. In days gone by the pace of life was much slower than it is today. With that, simpler aspect came the fact that things were much harder and time consuming. Every invention and improvement upon invention has catapulted us to the technological age in which we now live.

When you listen to the elderly people in your life talk about their childhoods it can sound like an old west movie. We cannot picture living without our modern conveniences like air conditioning and fast food.

These are the top 5 inventions that changed the world:

1.    Fords folly has changed everyone’s life forever. The first automobiles were considered foolish. No one imagined the impact they would have on the world. Before they were invented mass transit was science fiction, travel was slow and cumbersome. The wide spread use of the automobile changed society as a whole. From the products we can access to the way we socialize all is different now thanks to the auto industry.

2.    Indoor Plumbing: I will lay odds that very few people reading this ever used an outhouse. Or going out to the well and drawing water for a bath? Probably not many of you know any more about this than the stories your grandpa told you. You know the ones that started “I walked to school uphill in the snow, both ways!” You probably thought the other stories about hauling water and outhouses were fables too.

3.    Air Travel: Now air travel covers a broad area of invention and life. From commercial jets to a space shuttles air travel has definitely changed our lives. Without it there would be no electronics marked made in Japan. International business would be but a dream. No vacations to far off places nor any satellites beaming your favorite television shows.

4.    Medicines: This is not commonly thought of when we think of inventions; nonetheless, it is probably the single most important invention of all. Imagine life with no anti-biotics or immunization against killer diseases. It is not a stretch to think we may not even exist without medicines.

5.    Last but certainly not least is the computer. We have become so used to their presence that it is hard to believe that the home computer has only been available for around 20 years. I remember seeing the first ones in school when I was in the 7th grade. That was in 1985 and wow haven’t they come a long way in a short time. Everyday they are changing our lives, employment; entertainment even marriages are being arranged on our home pc’s.

All five of these inventions have changed our world forever. We have a better quality of life than has ever been seen in history. Where would the world be without her inventions? No hot and cold running water for your daily shower. No wal-mart super centers for all your grocery needs. Nope we would still be trading livestock for merchandise and riding a horse to school. Even our family relations would be different, when someone moved away there would be no calls or email to stay in touch.
